Army Generation ChartsHoplomachia

Armies and strategoi are rolled up on national lists rather than bought with points.

How it works

For a small army roll 1d6 for each Basics item on the chosen national list, then roll for the number of Options received; medium and large armies repeat the round once or twice more. Each point is a lochos, ile or stands depending on type. Strategoi number and characters are rolled, allies roll political stance, and the Hegemon is chosen by a 2d6 'vote' (+1 Crafty, +2 Demagogue).

Basics: for a small army, the player first rolls a 1d6 for each item on the “Basics” chart of his chosen list, which has a dot to the left of it.

Basic Roman types are always available; provinces unlock regional troop types.

How it works

Armies are limited to legionaries, raw legionaries, auxilia, auxiliary cavalry and archers, and artillery. Controlled provinces unlock types such as Praetorians (Roma), cataphracts (Asia), elephants (Africa), heavy armour (Fabrica provinces); points must still be paid. A temple gives D3 one-use +1 combat bonuses.

Additional choices will be gained by control of certain provinces, representing the player being able to recruit troops for which that province is famous.

Austrian, French and British army lists2 by 2 Napoleonics

National lists set min/max counts per unit type.

How it works

Lists use notation like 1-3 HQ (mandatory minimum) and (2)-6 (if taken, minimum 2). Optional new units include irregular shooters, irregular warbands and lancers.

Each command can take up to the indicated amount of units. A minimum number other than zero means that unit must be purchased

Numbered historical lists give each army's 12-element composition and plausible enemies.

How it works

Each entry gives the WRG list number, name, plausible contemporary enemy numbers and composition in element codes (e.g. Nubian: 3 3Wb, 6 3Bw, 3 2Ps). Some elements can be chosen as alternative types at each battle; other choices are fixed for a campaign or competition.

Each entry consists of the number identifying the army in our army list booklets, its name, the identifying numbers of plausible contemporary enemies, and its composition in number and type of elements.

Ancient and Medieval Army ListsHordes & Heroes: Ancients & Medieval

Free downloadable lists give stats and points for dozens of armies.

How it works

Medieval lists include 100 Years War English and French, Burgundian, Chinese, Hungarian, Korean and Teutonic. Each list gives unit stats, characteristics, combat stand counts and army-specific special rules, and the author presents them only as a guide.

The Hordes & Heroes army lists are provided only as a guide and the unit stats can easily be altered using the clear, standardised point system.

Divisional organisationK.I.S.S. Rommel

Each Division card has a fixed historical battalion organisation.

How it works

The organisation table gives e.g. German Panzer: 1 HQ, 2 recon, 3 tank, 4 motorised infantry, 1 artillery, 1 88mm; British Infantry: 1 HQ, 1 recon, 9 motorised infantry, 2 artillery. Independent armoured brigades have no HQ and attach to another HQ. The Custom HQ Cards and Blitzkrieg edition add further divisions.

These have no HQ but can be attached out to another HQ for the battle.

Viking, Saxon, Norman and Welsh warband lists.

How it works

The core book lists Vikings and Saxons (introducing mounted figures, which cannot form shield walls); a supplement adds Normans (mounted knights, crossbows, ride-by attacks) and Welsh (Welsh bows).

Saxon infantry typically fought with spears and fielding a Saxon army introduces a new unit type to the game—cavalry.
