Rule in play Fog of war blind deployment

Both sides plot initial movements blindly on gridded paper maps, and the referee rolls each turn for the fog to lift so miniatures can deploy out of the mist onto the table.

Rule in play German turn-end lifts smoke screen prematurely

The Americans step into the open expecting smoke cover, but the Germans trigger a turn end which immediately lifts the mortar barrage. Unmasked in broad daylight, the paratroopers suffer devastating point-blank German fire.

Fog of war (smoke)Balagan's Marlburian Rules

Firing units generate a smoke zone that horse can exploit when charging.

How it works

A firing unit places fog 50p wider than itself and 50p deep in front; it is removed at the end of the bound after it stops firing. Horse charging entirely through the fog roll 1d6 after moving: 4-6 adds 200p to the move.

If a unit fires, then indicate the “fog of war” in front of it. This is 50 paces wider than the unit and extends out 50 paces.

Smoke and wind driftDunn-Kempf

Smoke shown by cotton balls drifts downwind and blocks sight.

How it works

One cotton ball per two tubes fired; drift adds a ball downwind per bound for two turns after impact, with wind direction rolled on two dice; balls are removed one per turn from the end of the sixth turn. Tank self-screening smoke places two balls ahead for two turns then decays without drift.

The downwind drift of smoke is simulated by adding one more cotton ball per game bound in that direction for the two turns after impact.

At night the umpire sets the visual horizon, halves musketry and limits artillery.

How it works

Troops are placed only within the umpire-defined horizon; infantry fire uses die I halved; artillery reaches only 600 paces in the open (except enfilading defiles); every defeated force in close combat counts as totally beaten.

Sighting distances shrink as the battle progresses and are blocked by terrain.

How it works

Visibility depends on formation size and elapsed battle hours: a single man is seen at 18" in hours 1-2, falling to 2" by hour 6; a multi-regiment group from 70" to 25". Sighting in woods and built-up areas is 3", through crops 5". A multiplier table by observer height gives the dead ground distance behind walls, hills, woods and close-order troops.

Visibility and obstructions: The visibility of objects/troops is lowered as the battle progresses.

Maximum sighting distance / darknessMicro Armour: The Game - WWII (2nd Edition)

The board's general surface type caps sighting range, and darkness cuts both sighting and cohesion.

How it works

Unless the scenario says otherwise, maximum sighting distance is 40" in Open, 20" in Mixed and 10" in Closed terrain. At night, force cohesion drops by up to 4 (flares can offset this) and sighting is typically 1-5", 10" at most.

maximum sighting distance in “open” terrain is 40 inches, that for “mixed” terrain is 20 inches
