McFarlane Napoleonic Fire & Fury Variant (new charts)

Ports Fire & Fury's maneuver-table friction to Napoleonics with formation choices (column, field column, line, square) and national modifiers.

Redrawn charts for Bruce McFarlane's Napoleonic adaptation of Fire & Fury (from MWAN #74): quality conversion from Napoleon's Battles, movement rates, fallen leader, charge, musketry and cannonade, maneuver tables and national modifiers. Only the charts are given here, not the full rules text.

Command & Control

Maneuver TableActivation test

Brigades roll on a maneuver table, modified by leaders and formation, to see how well they carry out moves.

How it works

Good-order results range from Retreat and Disengage through Hold Ground, Tardy and Cautious to Well Handled, with columns by C-in-C quality (Napoleon, Exceptional, Average, Poor). Modifiers: exceptional leader attached +3, within radius +2, leader attached/in maneuver column/fresh +1, attempting emergency change or disordered -2, spent -4.

Fallen Leader TableLeader effects

Leaders boost maneuver and charge rolls and can fall, with graded fates.

How it works

Fallen leader results run from 'felled by cannonball' and 'shot dead in the saddle' to 'mere flesh wound' on 6-10. Attached leaders add to charges and maneuver; exceptional leaders give larger bonuses.

Each nation gets its own maneuver and combat bonuses by formation.

How it works

E.g. French infantry +2 maneuver column, +2 field column, +2 charge in column; British +1 fire in line and +1 column/+1 line on defence; Austrian cavalry +4 in line. Optional date-based changes reflect Austrian/Prussian/Russian reforms and post-1812 French decline.

Conversion chartTroop quality grades

Napoleon's Battles disorder/rout ratings are converted to Fire & Fury effectiveness ratings by class.

How it works

Classes Old Guard, Guard, Veteran, Regular, Conscript and Raw each have effectiveness triples (e.g. Old Guard 4/2/-, Raw 7/6/5) looked up from the Napoleon's Battles disorder/rout number.

Maneuver column, field column, line, squareFormations & formation change

Formation modifies maneuver and combat, and forming square or changing facing in an emergency needs a roll.

How it works

Emergency change: 1-7 unsuccessful and disordered, 8+ square or facing completed in good order. Infantry in column and in square receive different combat modifiers.

Charge TableOpposed melee roll

Charges resolve on a modified die-difference table from 'swept from the field' to 'charge repulsed'.
