Reaction-only ranged fire

Ranged fire inflicts no direct casualties; instead the target rolls on a reaction table producing behavioural outcomes such as holding, closing ranks, counter-charging, sallying, evading, disordering or routing.

Belos reaction chartHoplomachia

Missile fire never kills; it produces behavioural reactions from a pass/fail chart by intensity and Arete.

How it works

Whether the belos check passes or fails, the intensity is cross-referenced with Arete level on the Pass or Fail side of the reaction chart. Results: Maintain, Formation (close files), Charge, Belos Charge back, release Ekdromoi, Evade (hoplites march back one move), Disarray, or Rout of the lochos. Taxis-level reactions take precedence and the worst applies.

Therefore, we have not allowed ranged fire to produce a kill, but could route almost anyone, or at least sap their will
